Alastair Hignell - Matches, Microphones and MS

Matches Microphones and MSAlastair Hignell is renowned as a rugby international for England, a county cricketer and a much-loved broadcaster. Forced to retire from his playing careers at an early age due to injury, and then from his broadcasting career when his struggle with MS became too overwhelming, he has nonetheless lived life to the full.

Higgy tells his inspirational story with warmth and humour – from growing up as a bright and very competitive young lad, on to his successful Cambridge university days where he was the first person to captain both the rugby and cricket first teams, through his playing careers against and alongside some of the all-time greats in both sports, and a prominent broadcasting career that took him around the world to cover some of the biggest sporting events and characters.

All this success was brought into sharp relief by his diagnosis with MS, which eventually forced his retirement from broadcasting but also prompted him to become one of the leading campaigners for those suffering from the disease.

Higgy's has been a tough journey, and his story is a fascinating example of strength and determination when faced with adversity. Appealing to a broad range of sports fans, this story is about setbacks and triumphs, about making the shift from the athletic struggles of sport to the struggle of performing everyday tasks. It's the genuine and emotional story of how a highly successful sportsman faced up to a devastating illness and became one of the most inspiring personalities of our age.

    About the Author

    Overcoming Multiple Sclerosis
Overcoming Multiple Sclerosis Cover by Professor George Jelinek

Professor Jelinek, who no longer has any MS symptoms by practising what he preaches, has launched a new website to coincide with the publication of his new book. Both are called ‘Overcoming Multiple Sclerosis’.

He says lifestyle factors can do much to keep MS in check. Basically, these are Swank’s low fat diet which virtually cuts out saturated fat; taking vitamin D, meditation and exercise – 3 -5 times a week preferably outside. He says you should get at least 15 minutes of sunlight three times a week “as close to all over as possible”- easy to do in Australia, but less so in northern climes like Scotland.

He is also a believer in meditation and says this is a very important part – perhaps the most important part of the treatment package and should be done every day. With his wife holds popular retreats for people with MS offering meditation and healthy food in idyllic locations in Australia and New Zealand.

‘Overcoming Multiple Sclerosis’ has some similarities to ‘Managing Multiple Sclerosis Naturally’ by Judy Graham, but there are some important differences. The main ones are that his diet emphasis is more on fats than anything else and does not go along the Best Bet Diet or food sensitivities route.

His supplements focus on essential fatty acids and optional B group, and vitamin D. Taking MS drugs is OK, whether one of the disease-modifying drugs, steroids, or one of the new drugs for aggressive MS.
Being a medical doctor, Professor Jelinek only puts in things which have rigorous scientific evidence to support the therapies he recommends.

    Managing Multiple Sclerosis Naturally
    by Judy Graham

Managing MS NaturallyJudy Graham has written a completely updated book on Multiple Sclerosis called ‘Managing Multiple Sclerosis Naturally’. The line she takes is that – with lifestyle changes – MS can be controlled.

Ashton Embry, who wrote the Foreword, calls it “by far the most comprehensive, objective and scientifically sound overview of all the options a person with MS has to help keep the MS disease process well controlled.”

The book covers every single aspect of managing MS in a mostly drug-free way: Nutrition, exercise, complementary therapies, detoxing and clearing the mind of negativity. The new book also carefully lists all the dozens of scientific references.

Judy, 63, was diagnosed with MS 37 years ago but she still walks, and works as editor of New Pathways, the MSRC’s acclaimed magazine. She first wrote 'Multiple Sclerosis – The Self-Help Guide' in 1989, but so much has happened since then that it needed a total revision.

‘Managing Multiple Sclerosis Naturally’ is available from the MSRC Webshop for UK residents at the discount price of £14.00 including delivery for New Pathways subscribers; or £17.75 including delivery for non-subscribers. (Recommended Retail Price is £16.99. Amazon price £15.20 + £2.75 delivery).

You can also order the book from the MSRC office by Telephone: 01206-226500 or email: info@msrc.co.uk

Google:LDN! CoverDiagnosed with Progressive Relapsing Multiple Sclerosis, Joseph Wouk, youngest son of novelist Herman Wouk refuses to accept the doctor’s opinion that there is nothing more to be done for his medical condition.  He plans to go to the Amazon to try to cure himself with a Shaman’s ayahuasca ceremony.

The book begins as a journal entitled, PLACEBO – A Rationalist Seeks a Miracle Cure.  Wouk, a hardened western rationalist has no patience for spooks or spirits or any other new age wishful thinking.  His plan is to try to delude himself with psychedelics into thinking he is cured - Thereby activating the placebo effect to cure himself for real.

He covers all the bases: From Buddhism to Judaism.  From quantum physics to Gödel’s incompleteness theorem.  From alternative medicine to the Metaphysics of Quality.

Told with humor and honesty, Wouk pulls the reader through his thought processes as he watches his mind dissolve from the subcortical dementia caused by his particular variety of MS.

Right before he is scheduled to leave for Peru, all his MS symptoms suddenly disappear.  The only drug he was taking was Low Dose Naltrexone (LDN).
The second part of the book is entitled: LDN – Miracle Cure Found !  After his symptoms disappear, Wouk finds out that LDN has been stopping the progress of progressive MS for 20 years.  It also has been helping cancer victims, AIDS patients, Parkinson’s sufferers, and a host of other immune system related diseases.

Naltrexone was FDA approved only to treat recovering addicts.  The low dose version works its magic by tripling the body’s production of endorphins.  This restores the immune system to full operation; hence the drug’s ability to help so many diseases.  It doesn’t fight the diseases; the body fights them once the immune system is restored.  Because it is now generic, no one will spend the millions required for FDA approval.
Google: LDN ! is Wouk’s attempt at Dana Paramita, the Buddhist version of Christian “good works”.

The book includes a hundred page appendix with the most up to date information about LDN and its effects on immune system related diseases.
You’ll laugh and cry through the first part of the book and be inspired by the second part.

A man who refuses to give up in the face of insurmountable odds ends up completely healed despite the hopelessness that western medicine tells him he faces.

    The MS Recovery Diet
The MS Recovery Diet Coverby Ann Sawyer & Judith Bachrach

More than half a million people live with multiple sclerosis, yet conventional medicine still has little to offer patients. There is no known cure-and even recent breakthroughs in drug therapy do not work to control many of the symptoms or promise any degree of recovery.

But there is an alternative to drugs that can stop and reverse the ravaging symptoms of MS-the MS Recovery Diet. As this book explains, there are five common food triggers that can set off the symptoms of MS-dairy, grains containing glutens, legumes, eggs, and yeast. Yet because MS is such a complex disease, other foods play a role, as culprits or aides. The MS Recovery Diet explains the background, science, and development of this treatment in one source for the first time, and shows readers how to pinpoint their specific problem foods and sensitivities. It also offers more than one hundred simple recipes, as well as strategies to improve digestion, balance the immune system, and repair the body's myelin-crucial steps toward healing the body.

Both of the authors, Ann D. Sawyer and Judith E. Bachrach, who had been diagnosed and disabled by multiple sclerosis, have experienced incredible recovery on the diet. Within the first three months on this program, Sawyer was able to stop the disease progression and begin to walk short distances with an even gait. Bachrach, whose health has been declining because of MS for thirty-eight years, regained feeling in her toes in one week and after one year on the diet, has stopped taking all medication. This book shares the treatment plan that has dramatically changed their lives, and the lives of others who have discovered it. With inspiring personal stories throughout, it offers real help-and hope-for sufferers of MS.

    About the Author
Ann D. Sawyer has been a psychotherapist and college instructor. Soon after her 1997 MS diagnosis, she was put on full disability. She has also made it her mission to share the MS Recovery Diet and has been rewarded by seeing others recover from MS.

Judith E. Bachrach is a former dancer, movement instructor, and psychological counselor who has lived with MS for thirty-eight years.

    From MS to Wellness
From MS To Wellness CoverBy Betty Iam
    ISBN: 0-9663717-0-4

Betty Iams shares her emotional roller coaster after being diagnosed with Primary Progressive MS. She went from "stark terror" that she would become helpless like her mother, who lives in a nursing home and has spent the last 30 years in a wheelchair due to MS, to accepting the challenge to overcome this disease.

Betty believes that the creator designed the human body to heal itself, once we provide the necessary "tools" and healing environment. Her approach was purely logical (to return her body to a state of homostatis, perfect balance) so that healing could take place.

Physical healing is as much about healing the mind and spirit as the body. Betty believes that there is no single cause for MS, but rather it is an expression of a body out of balance due to one or more "stressors" (physical, environmental and/or emotional). One might call the MS symptoms a physical expression of a body with a biological process or processes gone awry.

    Who Said So?
Who Said So? CoverBy Rachelle Breslow
    ISBN 0-89087-630-4

How our thoughts and beliefs affect our physiology.

A Woman's Fascinating Journey of self-discovery and full recovery from multiple sclerosis, Rachelle Breslow finds that there is more to healing any disease than the technical/medical cures.

During the 1960s, medical authorities and five specialists told Rachelle Breslow that she had multiple sclerosis and that it was degenerative and incurable.

Refusing to believe that she had no options, Rachelle challenged conventional medical opinion ("who said so?") and embarked on a fascinating and remarkable journey of healing.

This determined woman then began a self-styled pilgrimage to regain her health, a pilgrimage that challenged traditional concepts of illness, health, and healing. After experiencing a fair degree of symptom reversals through lifestyle changes and alternative therapies, she realised that she needed to go deeper into healing, the process of which led her to a far greater understanding of the nature of life, happiness, and growth.

This is the powerful and very personal story of Rachelle's struggle towards health and healing, filled with the valuable lessons she learned along the way. This is also a book about the psychology of illness and the art of healing. It is about how to tap our innate power to be independently healthy.

"Who Said So?" shows how our thoughts and beliefs undeniably affect our physiology, creating both positive and negative impacts on our immune system, and it is the first book written by a former multiple sclerosis patient who actually takes us, step-by-step, through the incredible process that transformed her life.

    Taking Control of MS
Taking Control Of MS CoverBy Professor George Jelinek MD
    ISBN 1 86447 086

"Natural and Medical Therapies to Prevent it's Progression"

One of five children of Czech immigrant parents, George Jelinek was educated at Scots College in Perth. Before studying medicine at the University of Western Australia.

Whilst at school, his Mother developed multiple sclerosis, and by the time he had qualified in medicine she was wheelchair bound. A few years later she took her own life - such was her suffering.

George Jelinek specialised in 'Emergency Medicine', winning the prize in the first specialist examinations in that field in Australasia in 1986. A stellar career followed: President of the Australasian Society for Emergency Medicine, then in 1996, inaugural Professor in Emergency Medicine in Australasia. But at the age of 45, two years into that job, he too was diagnosed with MS.

Professor Jelinek accepted the disease as a challenge, searching the medical literature and modifying his own life according to the findings: support for new, disease-modifying drugs, and sound dietary modifications and sunlight may help in controlling MS.

More that a medical challenge, the disease has also led Professor Jelinek to re-assess his life, relationships and spirituality. The insights he gained, together with the dietary and lifestyle changes he prescribes will be of benefit to thousands of people with MS and many other chronic conditions.

    Electrical Nutrition
Electrical Nutrition CoverBy Denie and Shelley Hiestand
    Access Publishers Network (US)

"This is one of the most important books I have ever read," says reviewer Judith Lake.

Digestive disturbances and food intolerances are a common problem in MS and recent evidence points to faulty metabolism as a major factor in MS. The information in this book can help slow down the disease process.

Electrical Nutrition explains that food is digested (broken down by fermentation) in the gastro-intestinal tract. Faulty digestion leads to faulty metabolism. Toxins are produced from incomplete digestion leading to degeneration and disease.

In healthy digestion, the vital nutrition of food is broken down by the body to its chemical, molecular, atomic and finally electrical (energetic/vibrational) substance. This energetic substance is electrically attracted by the stomach and intestinal linings and passes through microscopic pores into the bloodstream. It then passes through tiny capillaries into the lymph system and bathes cells.

The cells' energy fields are of the opposite polarity to the food energy vibration, and at the cell wall, these two exchange energy via the fluid inside and outside the cell (medically known as the sodium/potassium pump system). This is how each cell of the body is nourished. It is an electrical and not a chemical process.

In faulty digestion, the malfunction of this electrical interchange is where degeneration and disease begin. Electrically damaged molecules/atoms are not able to function normally and become what are called "free radicals" which electrically damage everything they contact.

Electrical disharmony causes molecules to vibrate at a slower rate, become sticky, clump together and eventually block capillaries. They alter the polarity of the blood brain barrier and enter the brain circulation causing brain malfunction and degeneration.

The higher the vibration of the foods we eat, the more energy is available for cell nourishment. The more complete the digestion, the easier is the electrical exchange and maintenance of healthy cells. Degeneration and disease means that something has gone wrong somewhere within the energy system.

    Electrical Nutrition devotes chapters to:

    • "Vegetarians' Electrical Non-Sense"
    • "Grain - An Electrical Drain"
    • "Electrical Body Bombs" including Aspartame (artificial sweetener in "diet" foods), Vaccinations, Recreational Drugs and Antibiotics
Electrical Nutrition is a wake-up call to take responsibility for the state of the body. The following two quotes from it summarise the wisdom within its pages:

"As the body is an electrical reality, every aspect of every function is an electrical transmission, an electrical communication. To compromise (jam) any of these electrical communications is 'disease'."

"Everything we take in through our mouth, and everything we expound (thought, word and deed) is a frequency of energy, and energy shapes everything - energy is everything."

    Me And My Shadow
Me And My Shadow CoverBy Carole Mackie

Carole Mackie's tells her story honestly and directly. Living with Multiple Sclerosis has been a demand on her strength, and telling her story has taken much courage, laying bare the pain and humiliation that most people would rather conceal.

This book tells the truth about the disease and it's effects on living, loving and working. This is a moving personal story of love and loss - it is also profoundly educative.

Carole's story shows how hard it is for other people to grasp fully the impact of MS. This book is for those who want to learn about multiple sclerosis - whether it affects someone they care for or work with, a friend, a neighbour or employee.

    When The Road Turns
When The Road TurnsBy Margot Russell

"Multiple Sclerosis Is Not the End but a New Beginning" - International Stories by and about people with MS

"A book that reminds us to hold tight to our dreams, 'When the Road Turns' is an inspiring collection of stories written by people with multiple sclerosis. When you walk through the front door of these writers' lives, you won't leave without a renewed sense of hope and a definition of courage."

Montel Williams learned to snowboard. Julie Full-Lopez became a mother. Charlotte Robinson climbed Mt. Kilamanjaro. Each of these people achieved these milestones after they were told they had multiple sclerosis, proof that life doesn't end with an MS diagnosis; and in fact that many people forge ahead, creating richer and more rewarding lives because of MS.

In their own compelling words, eighteen people from all walks of life take readers on a journey - a turning point that begins when circumstances, not choice, drop them into a new world. With humour and frankness, they share their most intimate and life-defining challenges: experiencing the emotional turmoil of a chronic illness; adjusting to physical limitations; discovering new ways of self-measurement when their worth can no longer be calculated by late nights at the office or hours at the gym; and learning that they are not their diagnosis, but what they make of themselves in spite of it.

People like renowned oceanographer Richard Radtke, who becomes the first disabled man to reach the South Pole; an Israeli artist who discovered a new way to paint after losing the use of her arms; a pilot who fights the FAA to keep her pilot's license and wins; and Montel Williams, the talk-show host who finds a renewed sense of self through philanthropic work.

You will come to realise, as each of these people did, that we are most defined in moments of adversity, when we are called upon to be fully human and to embrace the unknown and its outcomes. Whether you are learning to live with a chronic illness or you know someone who is, these heart-warming stories will inspire you to embrace the unknown and blaze a new trail.

Margot Russell has worked as a news broadcaster, a reporter and a television producer, and was diagnosed with MS in 1998. She is actively involved as executive director of the "Sea of Dreams Foundation", which creates programs to better the lives of the disabled.

MSRC A to Z Guide to Complementary Therapies
The A To Z Guide To Complementary Therapies Cover By Judy Graham & Francis Pulling.

This book covers just about everything on Complementary Therapies and MS. Laid out in a simple A-Z format, you can look at anything from Acupuncture to Zinc and see how it can help MS.

The main message is that Complementary Therapies can improve the well - being of someone with MS. In some cases they bring about dramatic improvements.

These therapies also help manage symptoms, such as spasticity, bladder urgency, tremor, pain, and fatigue.

The book has plenty of 'anecdotal evidence', with people telling how a particular therapy worked for them. Many of the testimonials below are from people who visit the the Multiple Sclerosis Resource Centre website. We take the view that if it works for some people, it might work for others too, so it's worth giving it a try.

There is not a great deal of scientific research on complementary therapies for MS. But where there is research, this is included, together with references. The book also has an extensive resource list of places to go, practitioners, books and websites.

The following are just a taster of the testimonials you will find in the book:

"The things that really work for me are Diet, Exercise, Rest, Hyperbaric Oxygen, and Cranio-Sacral Therapy. None of the orthodox things did any good except physiotherapy." - June Brett, London.

"Acupuncture improves my energy, both physical and psychological, reduces spasticity, helps bladder management, and reduces particularly stubborn muscle tension in my back." - Karin Horne, Herefordshire.

"Crystal healing sounds nonsensical. But all l know is the blasted thing works for me. After lying with the crystals on for 45 minutes once a day, I can get up and walk on my crutches quite long distances." - Charles Fletcher, Scotland.

"I swim and also do aquarobics. It strengthens the muscles, increases flexibility, and also gives you an aerobic workout Despite having MS I am fit and well." - Gloria Tack, Southampton.

"I think homeopathy is very good. I take something for the central nervous system and something else for the immune system. I put nine drops in a glass of water everyday." - Judith Shutt.

"Since I've been seeing a doctor specialising in nutritional and environmental medicine, I've been much better. His treatment is diet, infusions of nutrients, oxygen therapy, and various supplements. The pain has gone, my balance and vision are better, and I don't have the same heaviness and tightness. I can walk quite easily and certainly don't need a stick." - Susan Austin, Bath.

"I take 54 tablets once a day. Taking the supplements has made me more confident and in control. Someone newly-diagnosed with MS should take them right away." - Lorraine Elks, Hertfordshire

    Life Interrupted
Life Interrupted CoverBy Chris M. Tatevosian

Inspirational New Guide Counsels Couples Coping with the Stress of Chronic Illness

Chris M. Tatevosian’s Life Interrupted-It’s Not All about Me shares his experiences with Multiple Sclerosis and how his attitude affected his relationship.

The book guides patients and caregivers with the awareness, knowledge and understanding they need to deal more positively with the emotional and physical stresses put on a relationship interrupted by illness or disability.

Chronic illness doesn’t just cripple the mind and body; it can cripple even the strongest relationship.

People dealing with MS or any chronic illness need coping skills. Now, Chris M. Tatevosian, a sufferer of the chronic disease Multiple Sclerosis, chronicles his own struggles and shows viewers how he learned to cope with the disease and with the subsequent breakup of his marriage.

The facilitator of a popular course, “Life Interrupted,” at the First Congregational Church of Hopkinton, Tatevosian shows readers how to better take care of themselves and maintain their important relationships. Written in warm, compassionate prose, the book explores how a “poor me” attitude can destroy a relationship, and it shows how to develop a greater feeling of self-worth and self-esteem.

Chris also writes about his faith in God, and his new wife, Jane, who he married in April of 2007.
