Formula for SuccessBy Betty Iams While I am not a religious person as in the traditional, organised religion approach, I am a deeply spiritual person. Those of you who have read my book "From MS to Wellness" know my personal philosophy of life. This past Sunday I happened almost by accident to hear Dr. Robert Schuller give an incredibly inspiring talk on television concerning his recent weeks-long visit to China, under the auspices of the Chinese government. It was one of the most motivating talks I have heard in years and I'd like to share some of it with you. The Chinese government's oversight of Dr. Schuller's trip meant that he could not openly talk much about his religious faith. Instead everywhere he went, including many universities, the subject of his talk was: I am, I can, I will, and I believe. As I listened to him I realised that he had just given an outline for success at anything.
Dr. Schuller's talk really hit me as very relevant for me right now, and probably for all of us. After three months I am now settled into my new home and will be staying in Davis, California. I am very happy with my new home and pleased with my decision, but after this period of personal upheaval, I have found it extremely difficult to get back into my regular exercise program. With each passing day I have become more and more convinced that exercise holds a major key to preventing progression of Multiple Sclerosis. During this period when I could do almost no regular exercise, all my MS symptoms were magnified - the weakness in my leg increased, the morning, spasticity became a problem for the first time, my acute and chronic low back pain became worse, and I had muscle cramps and pain in my legs that were almost unbearable at night... mostly because of lack of proper stretching exercise. I have been repeating Dr. Schuller's formula each day and it has helped me get back on track. I am now back to my normal exercise routine and slowly recovering. Remember - I am, I can, I will, and I believe.
